5 Signs Your Jet Ski Needs Immediate Repair (Don't Ignore These)

Your jet ski is designed to take a beating on the water — but it's not invincible. Ignoring early warning signs can turn a $200 fix into a $2,000+ engine rebuild. Whether you own a Yamaha WaveRunner, Sea-Doo, or Kawasaki Jet Ski, here are five symptoms that mean you should call a technician now.

1. Your Jet Ski Is Overheating

If your temperature gauge is climbing into the red, or you're getting overheat warnings on the display, stop riding immediately. Overheating can warp cylinder heads, damage gaskets, and seize the engine.

Common causes: Blocked cooling passages (especially after saltwater use without flushing), failed water pump, debris in the intake grate, cracked or kinked cooling hoses, or a failing thermostat.

In South Florida, salt buildup in the cooling system is the #1 culprit. This is why flushing after every ride is non-negotiable.

2. Loss of Power or Acceleration

If your WaveRunner or Sea-Doo feels sluggish, won't reach top speed, or bogs down when you hit the throttle, something is wrong. This isn't just annoying — it can leave you stranded.

Common causes: Worn or damaged impeller, cavitation from a worn wear ring, fouled spark plugs, fuel system issues (dirty injectors, failing fuel pump), or a clogged air filter.

3. Unusual Noises

Jet skis are loud by nature, but you know what your craft sounds like. If you notice new knocking, grinding, rattling, or squealing sounds — especially at specific RPM ranges — don't ignore them.

Common causes: Bearing failure (driveshaft or jet pump bearings), loose components, exhaust leaks, or internal engine issues like piston slap.

4. Jet Ski Won't Start or Cranks Slowly

This is one of the most common complaints we hear from PWC owners in Broward and Palm Beach County. If your jet ski cranks but won't fire, or it takes multiple attempts to start, you need diagnosis.

Common causes: Dead or weak battery (especially after sitting for weeks), corroded battery terminals, faulty starter motor, fuel delivery issues, or a failed ignition component. For Sea-Doo models, a BUDS scan can often pinpoint the exact fault code.

5. Water in the Hull

If you pop the seat and find water sloshing around in the engine bay or hull, that's a problem. A small amount of spray is normal, but standing water is not.

Common causes: Missing or worn drain plugs, cracked hull, failed exhaust gaskets letting water into the bilge, or a leaking ride plate seal. Left unaddressed, water in the hull leads to electrical corrosion, mold, and eventually engine damage.

Don't Wait — Get It Diagnosed

Every one of these symptoms gets worse (and more expensive) the longer you wait. Liquid Industries provides mobile jet ski diagnostics at your dock, home, or marina across South Florida. We carry diagnostic tools for Yamaha, Sea-Doo BUDS, and Kawasaki, and most common parts are on the van for same-visit repair.
